Beige Color Living Room Ideas – While color experts predict that a wave of saturated hues will dominate our homes, nothing beats the quiet beauty of a soothing, neutral room. An understated palette not only soothes the eye (who needs wall-to-wall designs after a day of staring at a computer screen?) and signifies effortless elegance, but it also promises — thankfully! – to never go out of style. Living rooms, in particular, are the perfect place to perfect a neutral color scheme with stylish furniture, soft rugs and effortless accessories. But while “quiet luxury” is trending and the “vanilla girl” aesthetic has had a moment on TikTok, a neutral look runs the risk of looking, well, too vanilla, or worse, just plain boring.
New York designer Augusta Hoffman is well aware of the pitfalls of neutral decor, but she embraces the challenge in her sophisticated designs. The key to keeping things from looking too drab? Embrace luxurious materials and sculptural shapes. “Working with muted tones actually gives the freedom to be more exploratory with materiality and texture,” she says. “To add warmth and comfort to neutral spaces, I like to layer a variety of ivory textile techniques with rich leather, patinated metal, organic stone and antique wood accents.”

And you don’t have to stick to a white or cream paint either. According to experts, the coming year will see a series of “new neutrals” that allow subtle base colors – think pinks, taupes and sages – to peek through the pigment. But don’t take our word for it: these 35 neutral living room ideas from our archives prove that it’s actually possible to outdo this photo.
Why Beige Is The Best Color To Use On Your Walls
In this pared-down living room, designer Chad Dorsey worked primarily in a cream palette in the furniture, walls, artwork, and accessories. The trick to warding off the “blahs”? Adding pattern, texture and modern silhouettes throughout, like the feather print on the sofa and the varied pile on the Rug Company rug.
Can’t commit? Play with a spectrum of favorite neutral colors, as designer Eva Bradley did in her classic San Francisco Victorian style. Here she proves that taupe can hold volume when done right, as with the classic Mario Bellini sofa and shaded striped drapes.
“We usually like a fair amount of color,” the client of this delightfully neutral Upper East Side apartment told us. “But in New York, it felt right for the palette to be more muted.” ELLE DECOR A-List design firm Redd Kaihoi embraced the brief with glee—with his own maximalist bent. Here, a classic palette of cream and beige is dressed up with complementary materials such as bronze, brass and gilded wood.
Our Front Room Makeover: A Long Overdue Reveal!
If the idea of a bare, beige wall gives you nightmares, choose a stylish hand-painted mural or picturesque wallpaper. Doing so in her own New York apartment, the late design legend Suzanne Rheinstein created a bucolic oasis in the heart of a concrete jungle.
And this California home, designed by Andre Herrero of Charlap Hyman & Herrero, is an ultra-cool example. Here, warm beiges live side by side with light white, olive green and even stainless steel in a scheme that’s easy on the eyes – in more ways than one, judging by the surreal wall sculpture!
Black and white isn’t necessarily shorthand for comfort, but as ELLE DECOR A-List designer Alfredo Paredes proves, the duo makes the perfect après-ski pair. In this alpine retreat in Vermont, he painted the entire living room white, except for the chimney, which he covered in jet black Venetian plaster. Not only does it create a focal point, “It feels more modern and kind of an exclamation point for the slopes,” Paredes told us.
Neutral Living Room Ideas That Are Anything But Boring
Did you know that potential home buyers will pay more for a house painted charcoal and gray? Even if you won’t be putting your house on the market anytime soon, it’s a pretty damn clever scheme, especially in the hands of celebrity designer Jeremiah Brent. Here, in the lounge of his New York office, the walls, ceilings and windows were covered in a gray color. Black velvet armchairs, a bold marble mantle and a gilded mirror add enigmatic luxury.
If you’re like most Americans and like a modern farmhouse look, go for a neutral variety. Here in a New York country home, ELLE DECOR A-List designer David Netto artfully mixed vintage furniture from different eras with vernacular fabrics and silhouettes in complementary tones. Bonus points for the painted ceiling!
If you have a view as stunning as this, Mother Nature has already done the hard work in terms of color. ELLE DECOR A-List designer Nicole Hollis embraced the surrounding dessert landscape in this epic retreat, which draws on an ultra-paired palette of travertine, bleached oak, and limestone.
Killer Color Combo
This tranquil space in a New York home designed by Alyssa Kapito is a masterclass in all-white layering art. Multiple seating areas—in soft white, of course—create a perfect environment for entertaining, while a plaster chandelier by Eric Schmitt “gives this lovely glow and a sense of architecture,” according to Kapito.
As an alternative to flat or gloss paint, try whitewashing. The trendy texture offers a cave-like warmth, or in the case of this Brooklyn apartment from the Office of Tangible Space, the feeling of living “in an acorn.”
This exquisite living room, the handiwork of Augusta Hoffman, features the designer’s light mix of modern silhouettes and heavier wooden antiques. “We decided to embrace [timber’s] materiality and use it as a contrast to the surrounding spaces,” says Hoffman. “With this, we had to make conscious choices to make the rest of the room feel light and open so that the dark wood tone didn’t overpower everything.”
Beige Living Room Ideas: Stay Neutral With This Calm Colour
If you fancy patterns in your neutral space, go for it! Just make sure they’re in a complementary tone and motif. David Netto protégé Lily Dierkes used a Namay Samay fabric in this Nashville abode. Full basket weave adds texture.
Traditional gets a twist at Reese Witherspoon’s ranch in Ojai, California. Designer and friend Kristen Buckingham, who had experience designing other Spanish-style homes, created a living room that felt “fresh and youthful” with linen upholstery, leather and wood furniture, and a soft whitewashed paint.
Just because you want a neutral look doesn’t mean you have to give up regional flourishes—or your taste for fun furniture. We love this renovated Austin farmhouse designed by architect Paul Lamb with its adobe walls and modern sofa and chairs.
How Would A Touch Of Beige In Your Decoration Effect Your Room?
This Sonoma, California property may be new construction (the previous home was destroyed in a fire), but designer Ken Fulk incorporated plenty of cozy, old-world touches, including a 19th-century stone mantle, which was imported from Italy. Unconventional shapes and large silhouettes, as with the Jane Hallworth cocktail table, bring the look back to the present.
Balance your neutral living room with deeper tones. Designer Tim Godbold grounded this room with a deep blue rug, a move that draws the towering stone fireplace into the scheme.
Think outside the box when it comes to the neutral living room of your dreams. Here, in a Manhattan model unit, ELLE DECOR A-List designer Rodney Lawrence specified a sunrise-like gradient wallpaper to create a soothing mood.
Beige Colors Living Space: Crafting A Timeless Aesthetic
To prevent your neutral plan from catching a case of blah, play with shapes. Here, in a Brooklyn apartment by Ishka Designs, circular silhouettes are repeated in the rug, cocktail table, lamp, and fireplace. “We like the circle principle,” says regular partner Niya Bascom. “There is no beginning, middle, end – only constant growth.”
Don’t be afraid to treat green as a neutral. After all, as Pantone’s Leatrice Eiseman tells us, “Mother Nature uses the ubiquitous in plants and foliage.” The designers at Ashe Leandro seemed to have taken that advice to heart, as seen in this Manhattan living room, where the curved olive green sofa is a seductive focal point in an otherwise neutral space.
