Unfortunately, bleached hair loss is always at one end of the spectrum. There are many factors that go into the success or failure of your hair transition from brunette to blonde.

Let’s start with some basics of hair color science here. Stylists recognize 10 levels of hair color, from dark brown to light blonde. Using blonde hair color over a brown base will not help to achieve any changes – before lightening brown strands, you need to “lift” them and remove their natural black color. As you can imagine, the more intense the change, the more damage your hair will suffer. So the rule of thumb is to only go two shades higher per appointment and never use bleach on damaged hair.

So get ready to pamper your hair and style it without hot tools. Stock up on a good quality sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner and use the conditioner every wash day. After the full blonde service, a hair mask once every 2 weeks is mandatory. You should also use a purple shampoo at home to maintain salon results and keep yellow and orange tones in between salon visits.

Brown hair regrowth is very noticeable on blonde hair. Root canal fixers can help you with this now, but don’t let them put off your repair appointment! Overgrowth is a big challenge for the stylist, as the heat of the scalp forces the hair to process faster than the roots, so there is a risk that the hair colors used will not match. Today’s hair color trends like balayage and dark roots make it easy to go from brown to blonde, but that doesn’t mean you can go without maintenance. Therefore, planning your next salon visit 6-8 weeks after your blonde hair coloring service is still a smart move.

Always be clear about your main goal and what color blonde you are trying to achieve. Trust my experience, light brown hair is a long way from your normal color, so give it a try before you commit to changing your hair color from brown to blonde. Balayage, foiling and hand coloring will deliver flawless results and bring you closer to the look you want to achieve.

For most of my clients, I choose the follicular technique with hand painting depending on the amount of lift I am trying to achieve. I start at the nape of my neck using back diagonal sections and work my way up to the crown of my head for a seamless blend. I then color the roots a slightly darker shade than the client’s natural color. And I get a beautiful brunette to blonde with the perfect blend!

We had to color this client right because her natural hair is dark brown and very resistant to lift. I left this gorgeous, rich brunette balayage and toned it down to take out all the heat.

There are also stylist tricks to help minimize damage. For example, the best way to achieve light blonde hair is to wet your hair after a full cut. This way you can damage the locks quickly and with less damage.

Don’t try to be blonde though. Instead, choose your own color for a subtle yet classic hair color. Here’s a scenario where a client has previously had stubborn black hair. We had to work with what we had and still managed to achieve these gorgeous brown accents.
